Biography

Yuxi Jiang is an award-winning dancer, choreographer, and PhD researcher based in Edinburgh. Her practice moves across dance theatre, site-specific performance, screen dance, installation, and interdisciplinary choreography, drawing from Chinese National Folk Dance, contemporary dance, and cross-cultural movement practices. Rooted in her training at Beijing Dance Academy, China’s leading dance institution, her work explores how cultural memory, inherited movement knowledge, and personal experience continue to live, shift, and transform within the moving body.

Her choreographic works often bring traditional movement vocabularies into contemporary spatial, theatrical, and multimedia environments. Her multicultural dance theatre work In the Round was presented at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2024 and received 4-star reviews from The Scotsman and All Edinburgh Theatre. Yuxi was a commissioned artist at Hidden Door Festival in 2023 and 2025, where she created site-specific works exploring ritual, circularity, cultural memory, and transformation through immersive environments and non-traditional performance spaces.

Her work and performance practice have received international recognition, including awards and honours from the Singapore International Dance Festival, Seoul International Dance Competition, Beijing Dance Competition, Los Angeles FEEDBACK Film Festival, and SINOUS Performing Arts Organisation. Her screen dance and media works have also been shown internationally across Europe, the US, and China, including at InShadow Lisbon ScreenDance Festival, Dare to Dance LA, FEEDBACK LA, Vesuvius International Film Awards, and contemporary art performance platforms in China.

Yuxi’s current practice explores the body as a living database of cultural memory, training, and personal experience. She is interested in how inherited movement knowledge can be re-encountered in the present, not as a fixed tradition, but as something active, shifting, and open to transformation.

Yuxi holds a BA in Dance Performance and an MFA in Dance Choreography from Beijing Dance Academy, an MSc in Dance Science & Education with Distinction from the University of Edinburgh, and is currently completing a PhD in Interdisciplinary Choreography at the University of Edinburgh, College of Art. Alongside her artistic practice, she teaches Chinese folk dance and contemporary movement practices across professional, academic, and community contexts in the UK and internationally.
